Harry C. Geisinger
Inducted January 2006
Harry Geisinger has had a long and distinguished career with the Georgia State Soccer Association and its antecedent organizations. He became involved as a soccer parent in the early 1970s, serving as volunteer team coach, assistant, and in various league offices, initially with the youth program at the Decatur-DeKalb YMCA. In those days, youth soccer players were assigned the used jerseys of the "Gray-Y" Youth Football program. Later, from 1975 through 1980, Harry led the growth of the youth soccer program as an officer at the Ashford-Dunwoody YMCA. He also served on that YMCA's Board of Directors for several years. During these dynamic, formative years, Harry's major accomplishments included motivating and organizing coach training and development for parent volunteers, as well as promoting policies and initiatives that stressed mandatory involvement of every youth player in every game. This led to Harry's becoming an officer and, later, President of the fledgling Georgia Soccer Coaches Association (in 1978).
From 1978 through 1980, he served as President of the Georgia Youth Soccer Association; working with key founders, he supported and presided over the successful implementation of the Classic League. Harry continued to stress statewide the concept of "every player plays in every game" throughout all affiliated youth leagues. He realized a cherished goal when he began the practice of annually inviting college coaches to visit our U-19 Tournament in Georgia to observe and consider our college-bound players for scholarships.
Harry served as Chairman of the Georgia State Soccer Association from 1981 through 1984, continuing his stress on mandatory player participation in youth programs. During his tenure, he pursued two key goals: first, his leadership stressed that the three divisions of the State Association were equal and needed partners in the growth of soccer in Georgia, and made sure that all three were given an active part in statewide soccer development; and second, through his active participation at the Regional and National levels of U.S. Soccer, he saw that Georgia took an active leadership role in those activities. It was during this period that, as part of his intense desire to see the parent-coach development process strengthened, Harry organized a special International Coaching Course in Georgia that was led (at his invitation) by the Technical Coaching Director of FIFA.
He has served as Director of Region 3-B of the USYSA, and has participated in a number of National Committees and task forces. Harry received the GSSA Life Membership Award in 1987. In the years since, Harry has continued his quiet, unassuming, yet influential and successful ways to keep actively involved and participate at local, state, regional and national levels as a volunteer, advisor, worker, motivator, and supporter wherever help is needed to promote our sport. Indeed, his influence has helped Georgia Soccer reach an enviable level of excellence.
